Burke and Hare

180 years ago today, the Irishman William Burke was hanged at Liberton’s Wynd in Edinburgh for the murder of Mary Docherty.

She was one of 16 murder victims of the infamous duo Burke and Hare (both William).

Just over 10 years ago, I produced an article for The Herald newspaper, entitled Making a Real Killing, taking a closer look at the facts of the case.

Academy award curiosity

The things you find on Wikipedia #7: Don Vito Corleone from The Godfather and The Godfather Part II movies is the only character, fictional or real, to have won Academy Awards in two separate movies.

Additionally, the character was played by two different actors.

Marlon Brando won Best Actor at the 1972 awards, and Robert De Niro won Best Supporting Actor at the 1974 awards.

Kate Winslet and Gloria Stuart both received an Academy Award nomination each for their portrayls of Rose DeWitt Bukater (Winslett for Best Actress, Stuart for Best Supporting Actress) in James Cameron’s Titanic, but neither won.
