Four years ago today, Gary Jules and Michael Andrews upset the odds by reaching the coveted Christmas Number One single slot with a melancholic cover version of the Tears For Fears song ‘Mad World‘.

The song was taken from the soundtrack of Richard Kelly’s cult classic movie Donnie Darko, the ending of which you can watch above, where the song plays out the final moments (warning: spoilers if you’ve never seen the film).

It’s a far superior offering to some of the sub-standard pish being touted as music in this year’s race, with the exception of Malcolm Middleton’s excellent We’re All Going To Die.
