As a colleague pointed out, the worrying thing about this is the number of comments.

On 1 December 1955, a 42-year-old seamstress named Rosa Parks was sitting on the Cleveland Avenue bus in Montgomery, Alabama when a white man demanded her seat.

She refused to move to the back of the bus, defying the rules which required black people to surrender their seat to a white person. Parks had been sitting in the “colored” section of the bus with three other black passengers who did surrender their seats; the “white” section of the bus was full.

She was subsequently arrested and fined $14, which led to a 381-day boycott of the Montgomery bus system, organised by the Rev Martin Luther King Jr – and eventually brought about the desegregation of the transport system and a giant leap in the black civil rights movement across the USA.

In 1956 her case ultimately resulted in United States Supreme Court’s ruling that a segregated bus service was unconstitutional.

Rosa died yesterday, at the age of 92.
