The Copydesk: Film-making tools and equipment are becoming less expensive, and video is gaining popularity on the internet as a result of broadband, so what are the new challenges for young film-makers over the next few years?

Chloé Micout: Effectively, the falling cost of production equipment means that young directors can have access to semi-professional tools - image quality, special effects etc.

This means that there's no longer an 'elite' of film-makers - anyone can create material, and then show it online.

The downside is that the potential production base grows exponentially and it gets harder and harder to get started if the world and his wife can be a director, if they've got a computer and a video camera!

If the tools are no longer the problem (drawing and design are more than just having access to paper and pencils...), like all art forms, what will stand out will be talent, originality and persistence.

I think the challenge for young directors going forward is not to get lost in the noise of wall-to-wall images from multiple media sources but to find their way artistically. And that's the hardest thing to do.
