The Copydesk: What would you say is the single biggest area where
the general public waste money, and what do you think could be done
to prevent it?
Martin Lewis: The
single biggest area in which people could save money is their mortgage,
and this is simply because it is the biggest payment we make each
month.
Sticking to the same mortgage can cost us hundreds of pounds, and
often remortgaging can solve this.
To help, there are fees-free independent mortgage brokers you can
contact who will look at all the mortgages available and find the
best one for you.
The bottom line is that anyone on a standard rate mortgage needs to
switch, and remember that even a small drop in rate can have huge
effects.
While that is the area of biggest waste, there are other savings which
can be made a lot quicker and with less hassle. The quickest method
by which we can save our cash is looking at our Gas and Electricity
suppliers.
70% of us have never changed these and are paying over the
odds.
For less than half an hours work you can save over £150 on your
utility bills by just comparing the suppliers and checking who is
cheapest.
You can do this easily by phoning around the companies themselves,
or checking internet comparison services.
It is vital that we always remember to think about how we spend our
money - in all areas of daily life. If we were all better consumers
across the board, this could give each of us the equivalent of a 30%
pay rise.
